How to pack in five steps
A good packing list is the first step. The second: stow everything so you can find it quickly on the way.
- Lay everything out and cut back. What you are not sure you need stays at home – that saves more space than any trick.
- Choose a system: by category (tops, underwear, electronics), by person (one colour each) or by stage of the trip.
- Roll or fold: rolling fills gaps and suits T-shirts and casual wear; shirts usually crease less when folded.
- Heavy items low or close to your back: in a wheeled suitcase towards the wheels, in a backpack close to your back.
- Keep essentials on top: documents, charging cables, rain jacket and snacks.
Packing cubes
Packing cubes divide your luggage into compartments; compression cubes also squeeze soft clothing. Which sizes suit your bag depends on its shape – measure the inside before you buy.
Two tick boxes per line
A trick from our printed lists: two boxes per line – “laid out” and “packed”. On the way home you can see what you brought.
